Why Your Brand Looks Different Everywhere & Why That Matters
Let's imagine someone discovers your business on Instagram. They like what they see, so they visit your website… But the website looks completely different. Different colours. Different fonts. Different photography. Different personality.
Then they receive an email from you & it looks different again. None of these things are necessarily terrible on their own. But together, they create a problem. Your brand becomes harder to recognise.
Consistency creates recognition
Think about the brands you instantly recognise. You probably don't need to see their logo to know who they are. Their colours, typography, imagery & overall visual style give them away. That recognition is incredibly valuable. You want people to gradually become familiar with your business. Every interaction should reinforce that familiarity.
Consistency doesn't mean boring
This is where people sometimes get confused… Having a consistent brand doesn't mean every social media post needs to look identical. It means there are recognisable elements connecting everything. You can still experiment with layouts, photography & content while maintaining your core visual identity.
Your brand needs some rules
A brand identity should give you a framework. For example:
Colours: Which colours do you use most often?
Typography: Which fonts are your primary & secondary choices?
Photography: What kind of imagery represents your business?
Graphics: Do you use shapes, patterns, illustrations or particular design elements?
Tone: Does your business sound professional, friendly, playful, authoritative or something else?
These decisions make it much easier to create consistent marketing.
Your website & social media should feel related
They don't need to be identical, but someone should be able to move between them & immediately understand they're looking at the same business. That's especially important when people discover you through social media & then visit your website before making an enquiry.
Consistency builds trust
People tend to associate consistency with professionalism. When everything feels considered & connected, your business can appear more established & when customers trust the brand, they're more likely to trust the business behind it.
Start with the basics
You don't need a 50-page brand strategy document.
Start with:
Your logo
Primary colours
Supporting colours
Heading font
Body font
Photography style
Graphic style
Brand personality
Basic layout guidelines
Once those foundations are established, creating marketing materials becomes so much easier.
